A dispute over 200 square yards in Moga districts Bilaspur village reportedly led to the murder of former SAD MLA from Barnala,Malkeet Singh Keetu.
Keetu (67) was shot dead on Monday allegedly by his nephews,who have criminal cases against them,at his native village. He died while being taken to the hospital.
According to sources,during investigations it has come to light that Keetu had dispute with his nephews over the plot located opposite his house at Billaspur. Keetu used to store dry fodder and cattle at the plot,which the nephews wanted to be vacated. The property was jointly owned by Keetu and his two brothers.
The family feud came in the open in the recent Assembly elections when the nephews openly supported another candidate against Keetu from Barnala. The fact that Keetu had adopted his sisters son Kulwant Singh Kanta the president of the Barnala Truck Union was also not liked by his nephews.
The acrimony between the brothers had grown since then. According to police sources,besides this plot,Keetu and his brothers had divided the property and business among themselves and were not on talking terms.
ADGP (Law and Order) S K Sharma said,The police have rounded up 17 people for questioning. We are trying to trace the six accused,including the three nephews,who escaped in a car after committing the crime. They left another vehicle with a Haryana registration number,which was impounded.
Keetu who had won Barnala seat twice in 1997 and 2002. He lost the seats in the 2007 and 2012 elections.
