Assault on French national: Armyman held on murder charges

In the ongoing investigations of the murderous assault on a French national Franck Wilfred,the Haryana police achieved a major breakthrough with the arrest of Charanjit,a Lance Naik of the Indian Army.

In the ongoing investigations of the murderous assault on a French national Franck Wilfred (33),the Haryana police achieved a major breakthrough with the arrest of Charanjit,a Lance Naik of the Indian Army.

Franck was mercilessly assaulted and thrown out of the Sachkhand Express train on April 29. He later succumbed to his injuries at Chandigarh’s PGIMER. According to the Haryana police,Charanjit,posted with 109 Engineering Regiment of Army in Dehradun,was the one who had assaulted Franck and then pushed him out of the train.

“Charanjit,who hails from Khanna,was arrested on Thursday night. Preliminary interrogation revealed that Franck allegedly misbehaved with Charanjit’s wife as a result of which he was thrashed. We are yet to verify his allegations. The accused was produced in court on Friday and the court has remanded him to three-days in police custody. The possibility of other persons’ involvement cannot be ruled out,” said V Kamaraja,Inspector General,Railways.

Franck,a frequent visitor to India was to leave on April 18. However,when he lost his passport he had to extend his stay. On the afternoon of April 29,Wilfred,severely injured and unconscious,was found lying on the platform of Haryana’s Karnal railway station as the Amritsar-bound Sachkhand Express pulled out.

The TTE,Manoj Kumar,was arrested after Wilfred’s belongings – a camera pouch,two packets of cigarettes,travel documents and a doctor’s prescription – were recovered from his possession and had initially charged with murder.
