In what appeared to be a case of mob justice, a 20-year-old man was lynched and his associate sustained injuries. He was allegedly inflicted by villagers in Kurumgarh area of Gumla district on Friday. The victim was a suspect in a gang-rape and murder of a 35-year-old woman on January 8.
According to the police, the incident occurred in Lalganj village Friday afternoon. The person, identified as Lal Mohan Mahato, and one of his associates were allegedly beaten up by a mob in the village. Mahato died due to injuries, while his associate sustained injuries. He was later handed over to the police.
Gumla Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations) Pawan Kumar Singh said: “It appears to be a case of mob justice. The incident of rape and murder had occurred on January 8. The woman, aged around 35, was married and would go to the forest for collecting wood. The accused had accosted her that day and murdered her after allegedly raping her. The villagers had apparently identified the accused and attacked them today.”
Singh also said that a large number of villagers were present there and it appeared to be a case of mob justice. However, it was not a case of naxals holding panchayat and handing out any orders, he added.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Gumla), Anjani Jha, said: “We have got the information about the death of Mahato. His associate was injured. However, we have not yet got the possession of the body. There was a case of murder of a woman, aged around 35, on January 8. Rape was also suspected, but the reports were awaited. In the meantime, the villagers identified the accused and rounded them up today. We are in the process of reaching the spot.”
