IIT Goa student dies by suicide in hostel room

According to the police, the deceased, a 19-year-old woman hailing from Madhya Pradesh, had been enrolled in the Computer Science and Engineering programme at IIT Goa.

A second-year BTech student of IIT Goa allegedly died by suicide in her room in North Goa on Saturday, said police.

According to the police, the deceased, a 19-year-old woman hailing from Madhya Pradesh, had been enrolled in the Computer Science and Engineering programme at IIT Goa. The incident took place when the student’s roommate had gone for lunch. When she returned, she found that the door latched from inside. Police said the hostel staff broke open the door and found the student hanging from a ceiling fan. She was rushed to hospital.

“She was declared dead on arrival. As per preliminary enquiry, it is suspected that the student was suffering from a health issue… A suicide note, purportedly written by the student, has been recovered. In the note, she apologised to her parents for taking the extreme step. The reason for the alleged suicide is yet to be ascertained,” said a police officer, requesting anonymity.
