Late night violence rocks Imphal, 1 dead in blast at university

In separate incidents of arson, Macha Leimai School in Imphal East district was torched and the offices of the United Committee Manipur, Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol, and Mapi Council were targeted.

A blast and a series of arson incidents, in which a school was among several buildings torched, took place in different parts of Imphal on Friday night. One person was killed and another was injured in the blast at Dhanamanjuri (DM) University.

According to sources, miscreants set off a grenade inside the All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) office complex located in DM University in Imphal West district. The incident took place at around 9 pm.

In the blast, AMSU member Oinam Kenedy (24), from Upokpi in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, was killed. Another AMSU member, Salam Michael (24), from Bishnupur’s Keibul Lamjao, was injured in the blast.

Separately, a series of arson attacks were carried out simultaneously in different parts of Imphal late on Friday night.

In the first incident, Macha Leimai School in Imphal East district was torched. Several offices of civil society organisations, including the United Committee Manipur (UCM), the Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA), and the Mapi Council, were also set on fire.

Firefighters were called into action, and they prevented the buildings from being fully destroyed.

Police have registered cases in connection with the incidents, but are yet to ascertain the motive behind them.
