The JMM-led alliance won the trust motion in the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday, getting 45 votes in its favour – on expected lines – in the House of 81. The assembly speaker, Rabindra Nath Mahato, said no one voted against the trust motion.
The JMM used the motion to attack the central agencies for the arrest of its leader Hemant Soren, highlighting the bail order by the High Court, which had stated that there exist “reasons to believe that Soren is not guilty”.
The trust vote was necessitated due to Soren getting released on bail on June 28 after he was arrested on January 31 by the Enforcement Directorate in an alleged money laundering case linked to ownership of 8.86 acres of land in Ranchi. Soren had then picked Champai Soren to replace him as CM, just before his resignation.
Just before the trust vote, Hemant Soren said the opposition doesn’t have an agenda, which is why they are creating ruckus in the assembly. He said half of the opposition MLAs will not come back after the upcoming assembly elections. He also thanked Champai Soren: “Main Champai Soren ji ko dhanyavad dena chahoonga, jinhone sarkar ko chalaya bhi aur bachaya bhi.”
Pradeep Yadav, a ruling coalition MLA, said the BJP was trying to continuously destabilise the government by using “Operation Lotus”.
He also waived the front page of a book by former BJP leader and currently independent MLA Saryu Roy, mentioning alleged corruption in the BJP government. Yadav also presented a booklet by Babulal Marandi, when he was not in the BJP, which detailed 46 corruption allegations against the BJP.
“Inke haath khoon se range hain, ab Bhagwan Ram ka bhi haath chor diya (There is blood on their hands; even lord Ram has abandoned them),” he said.
