‘Govt needs to dig deeper into funding and work’: BJP demands monitoring of NGOs and trusts in J-K

BJP leader Altaf Thakur said more than 16,000 NGOs are registered in Jammu and Kashmir and “some of them are receiving foreign funding”.

BJPThe party called upon the MHA and security agencies concerned to establish a robust monitoring mechanism to track the financial operations of NGOs operating in the region.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday raised concerns over unregistered NGOs and trusts in Jammu and Kashmir, alleging that several such entities are involved in “suspicious financial transactions with anti-national elements.”

Urging the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to act against these NGOs, BJP leader Altaf Thakur emphasised the need for comprehensive monitoring of both registered and unregistered organisations operating in the region.

“Central and UT administration under the LG must keep a watchful eye on the financial transactions and underlying motives of these organisations. The security and integrity of our nation cannot be compromised,” Thakur said in Srinagar.

The BJP leader said that these organisations “claim they are operating under the guise of social welfare while allegedly channelling funds to elements working against national interests.”

Speaking to the media at the party headquarters, Thakur said, “These organisations should be kept under strict vigilance to effectively curb anti-national activities across Jammu and Kashmir. There are individuals operating behind the facade of humanitarian work who are covertly supporting anti-national and terror networks through various means. We cannot and will not allow this to happen to disturb the peace in J-K.”

Thakur also named Khuram Parvez, a former human rights activist in Kashmir and coordinator for the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society, who was arrested in November 2021 for alleged terror financing.

Pointing out that more than 16,000 NGOs are registered in Jammu and Kashmir and “some of them are receiving foreign funding,” Thakur stressed that the “government needs to dig deeper into their funding and their work.”
