The Ministry of Education has banned the use of asbestos in construction or refurbishment of Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary said Friday.

“I was sensitised to the dangers of prolonged exposure to asbestos for children by scientists working in this arena. Asbestos is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, and over 65 countries have implemented bans on its use,” Chaudhary posted post on X.

“As Union Minister of State for Education, I am committed to working with State governments to ban its use in school. Safe learning environments are non-negotiable. In this regard, the Ministry of Education has issued guidelines to ban asbestos in any new construction or refurbishment of school in all the KVs and JNVs across India,” he wrote.

He said: “I hope this starts a movement to gradually phase out asbestos and we build a healthier and cancer-free nation for our children.”

After instructions from the Ministry of Education, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) communicated to its offices that Principals are to be asked to ensure a strict ban on asbestos in all ongoing and future projects of KVS, and take steps to replace existing asbestos structures. Similar instructions have been issued to the JNVs.
