India’s leading economist and professor emeritus of Sardar Patel Institute of Economics and Social Research (SPIESR) Y K Alagh and top scientists from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO),Physical Research Laboratory (PRL),Institute of Plasma Research and Gandhinagar-based Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) are among some of the leading figures in their fields who have been roped in to guide the research candidates of the Gujarat University (GU) in their respective fields.

Among the 30 scientists, who have agreed to act as guides for GU research candidates include ISRO director J N Goswami and IPR director Predhiman Kaw.

J M Vyas of FSL and Dr Ali Irani, personal physician of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, have also consented to provide guidance to GU research candidates.

The decision to rope in the services of experts in diverse fields from across the country was taken at GU’s research cell meeting headed by Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi on Sunday.

Trivedi, who has been heading the oldest university in the state for the last seven years, said he was greatly concerned about the quality of research at the university.

When contacted,Alagh said: “I would be very happy to supplement the research project of GU.” Alagh,a former union minister who has headed various departments like Planning Commission, said all the seniors in SPIESR could also put in their efforts and use their knowledge and talent to guide the research candidates enrolled with GU.

Trivedi said teachers from these research institutes could provide better guidance to research candidates.

Earlier, only professors from university’s faculty worked as guides.

According to GU officials,it is for the first time that experts from outside the university as well as state have been selected for providing guidance to researchers.

According to Trivedi, the new initiative would help the university to go for research even in those areas that had remained untouched so far, like space sciences.

The GU will also use the services of Imtiaz Malik, assistant commissioner of sales tax,in guiding researchers on Jainism. Theatre activists Rajan Sajan Mishra and Amol Palekar have been appointed guides in theatre and drama fields.
