Sending shock-waves among owners, the district education officer (DEO) of Gir Somanath has issued show-cause notices to 20 private schools asking them why they should not be de-recognise as they do not have mandatory laboratory facilities.

“We issued show-cause notices to 20 self-financed science schools on February 19 after it was found that they did not have required laboratory facilities and lab assistants. We had asked them to respond within five days. Till March 4, only five schools have sent in their replies. Therefore, we shall issue them final show-cause notice now,” Kanubhai Patel, DEO of Gir Somnath said on Wednesday.

“Since these schools do not have laboratory facilities, they are not giving practical lessons to science students. Nor are they conducting practical examinations and instead giving students marks in an arbitrary manner. Therefore, we formed a team and inspected all the 30 self-financed science schools in the district on February 17 and 18 and issued notices to those which did not have required facilities,” the DEO further said.

The schools which have been served notices are located in all the five talukas of the coastal districts—Veraval, Talala, Sutrapada, Kodinar and Una.

“We shall issue final notices on Thursday giving school two days to respond. If we don’t receive satisfactory explanation withing given time, we shall recommend Gujarat State Secondary and Higher Secondary Board to de-recognise these schools,” added Patel.

However, the DEO added that studies of students will not be affected even if their schools were to be de-recognised.

“In case their schools lose permission of the state government, students will be accommodated in grant-in-aid schools and their examination schedule will not be disturbed,” Patel further added.
