Tamil Nadu CM M K StalinThe Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday filed a Writ petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the Election Commission’s (EC’s) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, escalating a political confrontation over the controversial exercise a day after convening an all-party meeting in Chennai.
In its petition, filed through senior leader R S Bharathi and MP-advocate N R Elango, Tamil Nadu’s ruling party said SIR violates fundamental rights and risks large-scale voter disenfranchisement.
The Writ petition challenges the constitutional validity of SIR and seeks the quashing of the EC’s October 27 announcement of the schedule for SIR in several states.
“The Petitioner has filed the present Writ Petition challenging the constitutional validity of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral Roll and seeking that the Order dated 27.10.2025… be set aside on grounds of being in violation of Articles 14, 19, 21, 325 and 326 of the Constitution of India as well as provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960,” the petition said.
The DMK argued that allowing the process to continue would “arbitrarily and without due process disenfranchise lakhs of voters… thereby disrupting free and fair elections and democracy in the country” and that “the lack of due process as well as the unreasonably short timeline… make this exercise bound to result in removal of names of lakhs of genuine voters”.
The petition also stressed that a Special Summary Revision had already been completed earlier this year and the rolls are “continuously updated”, asserting no extraordinary circumstance justified an additional intensive exercise. “A Special Summary Revision (SSR)… was published on 06.01.2025… and has been continuously updated since then”.
Sunday’s multi-party meeting, chaired by Chief Minister M K Stalin, resolved to approach the Supreme Court and accused the EC of acting “undemocratically”. A total of 44 political parties took part in the meeting. PMK, AMMK, and actor Vijay’s TVK were among the parties that skipped the meeting, while the AIADMK and BJP were not invited.
DMK leaders have alleged that the SIR model, piloted in Bihar, led to the targeted removal of voters, including minorities, and warned similar outcomes could unfold in Tamil Nadu. The petition calls the matter one of “grave public significance… with direct implications on the fundamental rights of citizens and the preservation of the democratic framework”.
