MK Stalin is the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. DMK president M K Stalin was sworn in as the CM in May 2021. Born on March 1, 1953, he is the third son of M. Karunanidhi, the iconic Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and former Chief Minister. This political lineage cast a long shadow, shaping Stalin's life and career.
His early years were steeped in politics. While studying politics and law, he actively participated in student politics, becoming president of the DMK's youth wing. He then rose through the party ranks, holding various positions like treasurer and deputy general secretary. His focus on organization and youth outreach earned him recognition as a capable leader.
However, comparisons to his father were inevitable. Critics saw him as riding on Karunanidhi's coattails, lacking his charisma and intellectual acumen. These comparisons persisted until 2018, when Stalin was chosen as the DMK's president after Karunanidhi's demise.
This marked a turning point. Stalin embarked on a rigorous campaign to shed the "heir" label and forge his own identity. He adopted a more approachable demeanor, connecting with voters through social media and public outreach programs. He emphasized social welfare initiatives, focusing on education, healthcare, and women's empowerment.
His efforts bore fruit in the 2021 Assembly elections. Leading the DMK-Congress alliance, Stalin secured a landslide victory, ending the AIADMK's reign. As Chief Minister, he has faced challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and economic slowdown. Yet, he has maintained a focus on social welfare, launching schemes like the Kalaignar Kazhchi Vidiyal, offering free education to students from underprivileged backgrounds.
