Soon,eagle eyes to watch over CP,Barakhamba markets

Soon,the Delhi Police will be watching your movements in and around the biggest markets in Lutyens Delhi.

Soon,the Delhi Police will be watching your movements in and around the biggest markets in Lutyens Delhi. Connaught Place and Barakhamba Road — two of the oldest market areas in the city— are now going to come under the surveillance of 500-odd CCTV cameras,police said on Monday.

After installing CCTV cameras in key areas such as India Gate,Parliament Street,Jantar Mantar and the three courts in New Delhi area,Delhi Police are now all set to install an additional 500 cameras in major market areas coming under its jurisdiction.

“The proposals to set up CCTVs in CP,Barakhamba,Janpath and other market areas of New Delhi have been under consideration for long now. Some areas of Janpath is already under market surveillance. Cameras in Pandara Road Market too are mostly in place and will become operational soon,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi),K C Dwivedi.

The CCTVs are being set up,Dwivedi added,to combat terrorism as well as petty thefts and other crime being reported from these heavily crowded areas. Tenders are now being invited for the installation of cameras.

“The monitoring of the footage from these CCTVs will be done at the CP police station. Officials have already finalised a space there for setting up the monitoring room,” Dwivedi said.

“The CP and Barakhamba Road markets have been the target of terrorist attacks in the past. That is why,Janpath,Shanker Market,Bengali Market,Pandara Road and K G Marg — which are all critical areas in and around these two markets – are also being brought under the scanner,” he said.

Soon after the September 7 blast at Delhi High Court last year,police had speeded up the process of installing CCTVs in key areas. Around 40 CCTVs were installed and are functional at India Gate C-Hexagon,Rajpath and Tilak Marg area. Police have also installed 27 cameras with pan-tilt zoom facility around Jantar Mantar to cover the entire monument and stretches of Parliament Street.
