CPI(M) breaks ranks with Congress, criticises Tripura Government for denying permission to Nov 7 Tipra Motha youth wing rally

The state police had earlier rejected Tipra Motha’s application for holding a rally at Vivekananda Maidan or Astabal Grounds in Agartala on November 7, stating that the ground was occupied for the ongoing International Expo.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury Sunday opposed the Tripura Government’s decision to deny permission to the Tipra Motha youth wing to hold a rally in Agartala on November 7.

“We came to know that the government denied permission. It should ensure that political parties can enjoy their democratic rights, be it the Tipra Motha or any other political party. We don’t support the government’s decision,” Chaudhury told reporters at CPI(M) state headquarters in Agartala.

However, the Congress, another Opposition party in Tripura, had appealed to the state government not to give permission to the rally in view of the clashes during a recent 24-hour strike called by an organisation led by Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma over the Tiprasa Accord.

Asked about the Congress’s Opposition to the rally, Chaudhury said, “It should not be described this way. The Tipra Motha is an alliance partner of the BJP. I don’t feel that being in government, they would deteriorate law and order…”

When asked about Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb’s statement that the Tiprasa Accord is with Parliament’s Select Committee, Chaudhury said the BJP MP was expressing his ignorance about the Constitution through such statements.

Stating that the Tiprasa Accord was a ‘worthless piece of paper’, Chaudhury said, “The accord was time-bound, which means it was signed on March 2 last year and it had to be implemented by September 2 of that year. But it was not said whether it will be done through the amendment of any section in the Constitution or through other means… No question for making a Bill was raised, no demand was raised by the Tipra Motha, and the government also didn’t promise anything in Parliament… So, in which Select Committee will it go?” Chaudhury said, adding that the Accord has no connection with Parliament.
