Congress did not do what it needed to do… we’re learning from mistakes: Rahul Gandhi in Bihar

Rahul Gandhi targeted the BJP government at the Centre, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi “built a system in which 5% people have been running the country.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said his party has learnt from its mistakes and that its Bihar unit has been instructed to give at least two-thirds representation to people from OBC, EBC and Dalit communities.

The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha joined fellow Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar in the ‘Palayan Roko, Naukri Do (Stop Migration, Provide Jobs)’ Yatra in Begusarai, and in Patna, attended a ‘Save the Constitution’ meet – his third in three months – where he demanded the removal of the 50% cap on reservation.

Addressing the meeting in Patna, Rahul said, “I will be the first to admit that Congress did not do what it needed to do in Bihar all these years. We are learning from our past mistakes.”

He said the party is already taking steps, such as the reconstitution of District Congress Committees in Bihar. “Earlier, two-thirds of these were headed by upper castes. Now two-thirds of these are headed by the deprived castes. This has been in line with clear instructions from (party’s national president Mallikarjun) Kharge ji and me for the organisation,” he said.

Citing example of Telegana, Rahul said, “From the caste survey, we have learnt the exact (socio-economic) status of people there. Accordingly, our government removed the 50% quota cap…”

He targeted the BJP government at the Centre, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi “built a system in which 5% people have been running the country and 10-15 persons have been controlling the entire corporate world”.

“On the other hand, people have been taking up menial jobs like working as cab drivers, security guards, domestic helps. Even the poor among the General Category are finding it difficult to get good jobs…. If the Narendra Modi government does not remove the quota cap, we will throw it away,” he said.

He called Bihar the land of great political change, and said, “We are sure that Bihar will once again prove a catalyst for change (in the upcoming Assembly election).”

In Begusarai, where Kanhaiya Kumar is from, Rahul took part in a 1.6-km stretch of the Palayan Roko, Naukri Do Yatra.

Kumar, the all-India in-charge of the Congress’s student wing NSUI, has been leading the yatra since March 16. Newly elected Bihar Congress president Rajesh Kumar also joined Rahul and Kumar in the Begusarai yatra.
