As more trains carrying survivors of the Odisha train accident reached West Bengal from Balasore on Sunday, anxious relatives and family members swarmed the Howrah railway station looking for those injured in the mishap.
The second relief train from Odisha’s Balasore district reached Howrah railway station on Sunday around 2pm. “The train was carrying six passengers. Three of them were given first aid and one was sent to the NRS hospital and another to Howrah District hospital,” SP Howrah, Pankaj Dwivedi, told The Indian Express.
Holding Aadhaar cards and other documents to identify their kith and kin, people were seen rushing from inquiry desks and peeping inside train windows to find them.
Fani Mondal, whose relative was among the passengers travelling in the Coromandel Express, said, “My relative Nityam Rai is untraceable. His phone remains unreachable or switched off. “
Many of the survivors said that they boarded trains and buses from wherever they could in an attempt to reach home safely. The authorities have set up help desks and medical camps to tend to passengers arriving at the Howrah railway station.
Ambulances were also put on standby to take passengers to hospitals. There were wheelchairs and stretchers available for those injured, while announcements were made to guide passengers, they added.
The authorities assisted passengers in boarding local trains to reach their destination.
