Panjab University (PU) professor Bharat Bhushan Goyal, arrested for the alleged murder of his wife Seema Goyal, has been remanded in two more days of police custody.

On Thursday, the Sector-11 police produced Goyal before the court of Kaushal Kumar Yadav, Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC), while seeking an extension of his remand.

Police argued that they needed additional time to recover his mobile phone and conduct a face-to-face interrogation with his daughter. Citing these requirements, they sought four more days of police custody.

However, the defence counsel opposed the plea, stating that during the previous three days, the police had questioned Goyal for only a few minutes and kept him confined at the police station without taking him anywhere for investigation. The defence argued that there was no justification for further remand and urged the court to dismiss the application. After hearing both sides, the court granted two days of additional police custody.

Meanwhile, during the hearing, Goyal — who was produced in court with his face covered by a cloth — removed the covering and told the court that the police had not given him any food for the past 28 hours. He claimed he had been kept hungry the entire day and was provided only one cup of tea.

Taking note of his allegation, the court directed the investigating officer to ensure that his basic necessities were met and that no such complaint should arise again.

Goyal further complained that the police were not allowing him to wear socks, due to which his feet had become stiff in the cold. He added that the blanket provided to him was as thin as a shawl.

Responding to this, the court said that while he could pass directions regarding food, other provisions would be made as per the jail manual and established norms.
