A 37-year-old man allegedly killed his two sons, aged five and six, before dying by suicide in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada on Friday night, police said.
According to police, he left a suicide note saying the kids were not doing well academically and that he was concerned about how they would fare in life.
However, police said they were looking at all angles and expressed scepticism about the explanation that the act was linked to the children’s academic performance as the children were only in UKG and class 1.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident at Sarpavaram police station. Police personnel at the station said the man, identified as V Chandra Kishore, an ONGC employee, drowned his two sons in the bathroom before taking his own life.
C Sunil, a colleague of Kishore, told The Indian Express, “We are not sure why this happened. We are right now busy with arranging the funeral.”
According to officials, Kishore’s wife Tanuja and neighbours at their apartment complex called police on Friday night after they saw Kishore’s body from a window of their flat.
“On Friday, the family attended a function at Kishore’s office. While there, Kishore told his wife that he was taking the kids to a tailor to get new uniforms,” an official said.
“His wife waited for several hours and when he did not return or answer her calls, she went home and found the flat locked from inside. She and neighbours broke a window and found Kishore dead. They broke open the door and found the two kids in the bathroom. Their hands and legs were tied and their heads were in a bucket. They were drowned in the bucket before Kishore took his life,” the official said.
Kishore, who was from West Godavari district, left a suicide note saying he was concerned about how the two kids would survive in the real world since their academic performance was not very good, police said.
However, an officer said, “How the kids aged five and six, in UKG and class 1, will fare in the real world cannot be judged so early. We are not sure what their father thought… There could be other reasons why Kishore took this extreme step. We came to know that the two kids had joined a new school recently and that they were not coping well with the change. We are investigating all angles.”
Police are questioning Kishore’s wife and also seeking information from relatives who live in the same locality.
