Speaking to reporters on his return from Delhi after talks with the central BJP leadership, former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Wednesday said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah agrees with the need to have “a popular government” in the state.
“With regards to the people’s desire for a popular government, he (Shah) said the Central leaders also want the same. However, he said the matter would be discussed soon based on the developing situation in the state,” Biren Singh said, adding that they had apprised the minister on the “aggravating” conditions.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13. Recently, 23 BJP MLAs (of the party’s 37, and barring all the seven Kuki legislators) issued a statement saying that they “resolved to put aside personal ambitions” in the “larger interest” of working towards the formation of a popular government in the state. They included both those opposed to Biren and those who supported him all through the pressure to remove him.
Since then, Manipur has seen a fresh spurt of violence following action against a self-styled leader of the radical Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol, by the CBI. Biren left for Delhi along with Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba on Monday, to brief the leadership on the situation in the state.
Biren said they met Shah twice, a two-hour meeting late Monday night and another 45-minute one on Tuesday afternoon. “We had threadbare discussion on issues confronting the state and also apprised him of the aggravating situation in Manipur,” he said.
“He (Shah) has given us some groundwork responsibilities, which I cannot disclose at the moment. However, civil bodies, MLAs and the public must take a unanimous stand to resolve the ongoing violence in Manipur,” Biren said.
Shah is holding multiple rounds of dialogue with various communities to address the crisis, and has appealed to all to maintain peace, the BJP leader added. He also said that the Centre is committed to maintaining Manipur’s “territorial integrity”; one key Kuki demand is a separate autonomous region for the community.
The former CM said the issue of “illegal immigrants” came up as well, and they requested an extension of 30 days for their detection.
