The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police arrested three Uttar Pradesh residents with arms and ammunition from Mahatma Gandhi Road within the limits of Burrabazar police station late Friday night.

Investigators identified the accused as Santosh Sahani, 37, Jitendra Kumar, 38, and Manoj Kumar, 46. Two semi-automatic pistols (9 mm and 7mm), four empty magazines, and 17 rounds of ammunition were recovered from them, the police said.

According to the STF, following a tip-off, the police stopped the Uttar Pradesh-registered Toyota Etios car in which the accused were travelling and carried out a search which led them to recover the weapons. Sources said the arms were concealed in the vehicle’s air filter chamber.

The police are investigating if the accused were in Kolkata to supply the arms or to trigger unrest in some area.

Last month, the STF arrested five people in Sealdah and recovered arms from the area’s Baithakkhana. According to sources in the STF, local residents saw a few people getting into a fight in front of Surendranath College and came to know that police officers were intercepting some suspects. Sources said that after the five suspects were detained, STF personnel recovered several firearms and ammunition from their backpacks.

In November 2024, the police busted an arms racket in the same area after nabbing a suspect and seizing arms and ammunition from him, including three single-shot firearms, two 7 mm semi-automatic pistols, 50 rounds of 8 mm bullets and 40 rounds of 7.65 mm bullets. During the probe, the police learnt that the arms and ammunition were brought from Munger in Bihar and were meant to be sold in Kolkata.
