NHAI KYV process 2025: In a relief to vehicle owners, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTag users.
The KYV process was implemented last year, in an attempt to prevent the leakages in the FASTag system, as some truck drivers were allegedly using the car tags to avoid paying high tolls. However, the process became an additional burden, where many people faced difficulties in uploading multiple photos of the vehicle, relevant documents and navigating the not-so-user-friendly websites. Some people also complained about the harassment at the toll gates after their FASTag was suddenly frozen for not completing the KYV verification.
Now, in revised guidelines issued by Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), an NHAI company, FASTag services will not be discontinued for non-compliant vehicles and users will be provided sufficient opportunity to complete the KYV process.
What is Know Your Vehicle (KYV)?
Know your vehicle or KYV is a system where all FASTag users have to submit their Registration Certificate (RC) and vehicle image to ensure that the FASTag has been affixed to the correct vehicle. The whole process has to be repeated every three years to ensure no misuse.
The circular also states that the KYV process should also coincide with the OVOT (one-vehicle-one tag) mandate, which was made mandatory from October 31, 2024.
What has changed?
According to the revised guidelines, the side photographs of the Car, Jeep or Van will no longer be required. Only a front picture showing the number plate and FASTag on the windshield will be required to be uploaded. Earlier, the users had to upload front and side photos of the vehicle. Side image was meant to capture the vehicle axles.
NHAI said that provisions will be made to automatically fetch RC details from the government’s VAHAN database when the user enters the Vehicle Number, Chassis Number, or Mobile Number. If multiple vehicles are registered against a single mobile number, the user will be able to select the vehicle for which they wish to complete KYV, NHAI said.

Most importantly, now the FASTags issued before the KYV policy will remain active unless complaints are received for loose tags or misuse. Also, issuer banks will send SMS reminders to the users to complete KYV.
Can users file complaints?
Yes. In case of any query or the difficulty, the FASTag users can file a complaint on National Highway helpline number 1033 for any KYV related issues with their issuer bank.
NHAI also said that if a user faces difficulty in uploading documents for any reason, it will be the responsibility of the issuing bank to contact the customer and assist in completing the KYV process before disconnection.
The simplification of KYV rules is part of NHAI’s initiative to strengthen the FASTag ecosystem as it is preparing to implement a multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system, a barrier-less tolling system, at key sections of National Highways.
