On the night of January 28 2002, Anil Kumar — a tailor — was returning to his house in South East Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar after a hard day’s work. After traversing the garbage‑cluttered lanes, he reached his modest one‑room accommodation. To his surprise, he found the door already open.

Inside the house, the tables and the bed were found in a ransacked state, while the kitchen door was locked.

“Upon entering the house, he found the bodies of his wife, Anita (22), and daughter, Megha (2), lying in a pool of blood. The victims had sustained multiple injuries, including wounds to the neck and other parts of the body,” DCP (Crime) Pankaj Kumar said.

Days later, Sushil Kumar — one of the accused — was arrested. However, his co‑accused Amaltesh remained on the run. Meanwhile, in 2007, Sushil jumped parole months after his death sentence was changed to life imprisonment.

Amaltesh’s luck eventually ran out when he was arrested by the Crime Branch in Gujarat — 23 years after the murder. Meanwhile, Sushil was also arrested from Bihar.

“Amaltesh had studied up to Class 8. He is married and has four children. He was apprehended while working as a labourer in a factory in Gujarat’s Jamnagar,” DCP Pankaj said.

According to police, Sushil had moved between several states before finally settling near the Nepal border.

Sushil had revealed to the police in 2002 that he and his friend Amaltesh–both tailors then–were angry at Anil for raking in more business than both of them combined.
