Kim Soo Hyun might have lost major brand deals, projects, and even friendships in the industry, but his loyal fans have made it clear, they’re not going anywhere, even during the “tearful days.” As backlash surrounding the actor continues to grow, with no major developments linking him to the death of late actress Kim Sae Ron, fans have launched a global petition defending him and calling out the “online witch-hunt.” This move is being seen as a counter to the “Kim Soo Hyun Prevention Act”, a separate petition filed on March 31 that urged South Korean lawmakers to raise the age of consent and enforce stricter penalties for statutory rape, following allegations that the actor had been in a relationship with a minor.

On April 12, an international fan account posted an emotional video of Kim from his Japan fan meeting. In the clip, he’s seen smiling and waving to fans amid the backlash that began plaguing his career in March. The post carried messages of hope, loyalty, and a petition link that’s now gone viral. “Even on tearful days, I’ll keep supporting him with a firm heart,” one fan wrote. “Believing in the truth of Kim Soo Hyun’s journey, his fans will never leave.”

Fans labelled the petition as their direct response to the recent controversy and slander, condemning, ‘online public trial,’ where they claimed how unverified rumours are spreading like wildfire, damaging Soo Hyun’s reputation, invading his privacy, and fueling hate. “Even if mistakes were made, the widespread circulation of baseless accusations and defamatory videos constitutes a modern-day online public trial,” it says. “It violates the presumption of innocence,” an excerpt of the petition reads. Fans are demanding that people stop judging him before any legal outcome is clear. “There are fans all over the world who support Kim Soo Hyun. Don’t worry and stay strong,” supporters rallied behind him with encouraging messages.

Meanwhile, others are clearly offended by this move, calling out his supporters and questioning where they were when Kim Sae Ron faced a public trial, which led her to take such drastic action at a young age over a DUI scandal. They pointed to the malicious comments and hate posts flooding her social media when she shared a photo with Kim Soo Hyun after Queen of Tears’ success, a connection that the actor and his agency had initially denied but later acknowledged during a recent press conference, admitting they were briefly in a relationship.

Kim Soo Hyun’s defamation lawsuit shows a discrepancy

Following the press conference, Kim Soo Hyun has filed a defamation lawsuit, demanding around 12 billion KRW (over $8 million USD) from Sae Ron’s family and the YouTube channel, GaroSero, responsible for pushing the story. However, on April 17, it was reported that the actor’s legal team made an error while filing the suit. According to Koreaboo, only 11 billion KRW was officially registered, as a result, the court asked for the correction. Seven days were granted to fix the paperwork and resubmit. But his team didn’t meet the deadline, they waited until the very last day to ask for an extension. That delay has raised eyebrows as many think it might be a stalling tactic. On the other hand, if the extension isn’t granted or the fees aren’t paid soon, the whole case could be thrown out.

Gold Medalist has also initiated legal action against multiple social media handles and individuals circulating ‘defamatory’ and ‘malicious’ posts against the actor, which they said were traced in part with the help of Soo Hyun’s fans. They have vowed zero tolerance against such handles and have extended their lawsuits overseas, collaborating with foreign legal experts.
