Kim Sae Ron’s ex-boyfriend has spoken out amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the late actor’s death and her alleged ties to top Korean star Kim Soo Hyun. In an interview with The Fact on Wednesday, he claimed that the Queen of Tears actor is being “unfairly targeted” and insisted that the real issue lies with Sae Ron’s “abusive” husband, whom she married in the U.S. His remarks come as controversy continues to impact Soo Hyun’s career and brand endorsements, with his recent Taiwan fan meeting being cancelled.
Kim Sae Ron’s ex-boyfriend expressed frustration over the false narratives circulating online. “I know for sure that Sae Ron’s death had nothing to do with Kim Soo Hyun,” he stated. “There are too many misleading claims. I’m angry, and I want at least part of the truth known so that she can rest in peace.” Rumours have linked Kim Sae Ron’s death to various factors, including her past relationship with Kim Soo Hyun, financial struggles, and issues with her former agency, Gold Medalist. However, her ex-boyfriend clarified that she would not have wanted her passing to be tied to misinformation.

According to her ex-boyfriend, The Queen’s Classroom star was drowning in emotional distress in the months leading up to her death. She was caught between her past relationship with him and a wedding she had in January in New York. He claimed that after the marriage, she confided in him about her husband’s alleged emotional abuse. She told him that her husband took away her phone, monitored her messages, and verbally harassed her. The same claims were made in an audio recording released by YouTuber Lee Jin Ho, who first reported on her marriage overseas.
In a message dated January 13, her husband allegedly wrote, “You’re married now, so don’t contact anyone else. Clean up the mess you made. You disgusting idiot.” Kim Sae Ron’s ex-boyfriend also revealed that she had attempted self-harm multiple times during this period. Contrary to the wild claims made by Dispatch and GaroSero, he stated that Kim Sae Ron’s distress was far from her ₩700 million ($522,000) dispute with her former agency, co-owned by Soo Hyun. He explained that the issue had been raised over a year ago and was largely procedural rather than a sudden financial crisis.
The ex-boyfriend then showed another message, dated January 15. In it, Kim Sae Ron expressed deep fear and regret. “I’m sorry. Just curse at me. Call me crazy, call me a lunatic. I keep getting hit and yelled at, but nothing changes. If only you could be happy, I wouldn’t ask for anything else, not even dreams. You were the person I loved most in the world.” She also revealed that she had married her husband out of fear, and now she feels trapped.
“I started seeing him in November. At first, it was just loneliness. I needed someone who would listen and help. But soon, he threatened to leak our chat history and photos, hacked my Instagram, hit me, and screamed at me. I was terrified. I couldn’t leave, and I was afraid it would hurt you.” He also pointed out that Kim Sae Ron was allegedly abandoned by her family. On November 1, 2024, after a self-harm incident, no family members visited her at the hospital despite being contacted. He found it especially painful that her aunt, who acted as the family’s spokesperson after her death, appeared on a YouTube channel and suggested Kim Soo Hyun was somehow linked to the tragedy.
“How could her family not even know she got married? That alone shows how little communication there was,” he said. “Now that she’s gone, bringing up her past with a celebrity feels like an attempt to push a certain narrative. I don’t know Kim Soo Hyun, but blaming him just because he’s famous is incredibly unfair.”
