Jyotika on being Suriya’s wife, facing casual sexism: ‘There are hundred instances I can point out’

Jyotika, a superstar in her own right, opened up about the blatant discrimination that she faces in the industry, especially since she is the wife of superstar Suriya.

Jyotika’s first lead role was in Suriya’s Poovellaam Kaettupaar, which was helmed by director Vasanth, who introduced the Soorarai Pottru star in the 1997 film, Nerukku Naer. Both the actors, now married for almost two decades, have carved individual paths for themselves in Indian cinema, and in her second coming of sorts, Jyotika has diversified her filmography with interesting projects not only on the big screen but on streaming platforms too.

Now, Jyotika is awaiting the release of Netflix’s Dabba Cartel, which revolves around five ordinary women finding themselves in the dark underbelly of drugs, guns, and mayhem. In a role that has similar shades to her own life where she quit cinema at the heights of her career to take care of her family, Jyotika plays a housewife of a business tycoon, who finds a way back into the work sphere albeit in a different space altogether.

In a conversation with News 18 Showsha, Jyotika, a superstar in her own right, opened up about the blatant discrimination that she faces in the industry, especially since she is the wife of a superstar. “If I say that I feel lucky to have married Suriya, people say that he’s a really nice guy. If he says that he feels lucky to have married a nice woman, the conversations is once again like Suriya is such a nice guy that he’s thinking of his wife,” said Jyotika, who pointed out how this casual sexism manifests in different forms in everyday life too. “Sometimes, it reaches a level where you may have an identity crisis. There are hundreds of instances that I can point out.”

Pointing out how this discrimination pervades into various layers of one’s life, Jyotika revealed that being at the receiving end of this phenomenon can give women an identity crisis. “A woman’s search for her identity also nudges one to take a lot of decisions and make choices on their own. That’s also how I chose my career path,” she states.

Dabba Cartel is headlined by Shabana Azmi, Jyotika, Nimisha Sajayan, Shalini Pandey, Anjali Anand, Sai Tamhankar, Jisshu Sengupta, Lillete Dubey, Bhupendra Singh Jadawat, and Gajraj Rao. Backed by Excel Entertainment, and created by Shibani Akhtar, Vishnu Menon, Gaurav Kapur, and Akanksha Seda, Dabba Cartel is set to stream on Netflix from February 28.
