Black Warrant, the new Netflix series that follows rookie jailer Sunil Kumar Gupta’s trials and tribulations inside Delhi’s Tihar Jail, presents serial killer Charles Sobhraj as an enigmatic charmer. And if the real-life Sunil is to be believed, Sobhraj was quite the lady-killer. In fact, Sunil believed that he, too, would have danced to Sobhraj’s tunes if he was a woman. In the show, Sunil is played by Zahan Kapoor and Sobhraj is played by Sidhant Gupta.
In an earlier chat with The Lallantop, Sunil Kumar Gupta, who also co-authored the book Black Warrant with journalist Sunetra Choudhury, recalled his experiences with Sobhraj and said that the serial killer called him after he was released from prison in 2022. Sobhraj read his book and assured Sunil that he would help him promote it. Recalling the early 1980s, he said that the serial killer’s word had more value than that of an IG (Inspector General).
When asked why, Sunil explained, “He was known as the ‘lady killer’ and sometimes, I wondered that if I was a lady, he could’ve taken advantage of me. The way he spoke, there was a charm to it. He had a beautiful face, sharp eyes.” He said that at this time, there were two murder and rape cases against Sobhraj. He proceeded to talk about his modus operandi. Sunil said that Sobhraj operated out of Goa and would start by befriending female foreigners. “He could charm any woman, age no bar,” he said. After developing a friendship with them, he would call them for dinner, drug them, rape them and then run away with all their belongings. “He was a brutal man,” he recalled.
Sunil then spoke about Sobhraj’s female fandom during his time in Tihar, and said that the day he would get any female visitors, he would make an effort in getting ready. “He had lots of shoes, which was allowed then,” he said. Sobhraj would smell like he bathed in perfume, and Sunil could smell it from quite a distance. Sunil said that because of his designation at the time, most of these meetings would happen in his room. He said women from different walks of life would come in to interview him and Sobhraj made an effort every single time.
After being released from prison in Nepal in 2022, Sobhraj was deported to France. Black Warrant, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, is co-produced by Applause Entertainment, Andolan Production, and Confluence Media.
