Netflix’s first original Korean series of 2024 follows the story of Lee Tang (played by Choi Woo-sik), your typical college student with not-so-great ambitions and a part-time job at the local supermarket. However, Lee’s life takes a drastic turn when he finds himself in a deadly situation.

Caught between his dreams of studying abroad in Australia and his responsibilities to family, Lee’s world is rocked when he becomes entangled with two intoxicated men. In a split-second decision, Lee finds himself in a life-or-death situation, leading to a tragic outcome.

But the plot thickens when Lee discovers that one of the men he’s crossed paths with is not who he seems to be  – he’s a dangerous criminal. As Lee comes to terms with the consequences of his actions, a detective  Jang Nan-gam (played by Son Suk-ku) begins to close in on him, determined to uncover the truth at any cost. Now, Lee is a part of a dangerous game of cat and mouse, all the while trying to keep his own secrets hidden. Will Lee be able to outsmart the detective and clear his name, or will he become a victim of his own actions?

As the criminal’s identity is revealed and the lines between victim and perpetrator blur, viewers will be left pondering the nature of guilt and responsibility. Will the guilt of unknowingly taking a life haunt the protagonist, Lee Tang, as he realises the fallout of his actions? And what about the detective hot on his trail – will he question the righteousness of his pursuit?

Throughout the initial episodes, these questions will loom large, challenging both the characters and the audience alike. Just like Netflix’s Mask Girl,  the roles of victim and criminal become intertwined in this doomed tale. Is justice still attainable in such a tangled web of circumstances? The guilt factor in Lee seems to be diminish with every murder and his subconscious tells him, ‘They deserve to die.’

While the answers may remain unclear, the exploration of guilt and accountability will serve as a central theme, driving the story forward and keeping viewers engaged until the very end. But here’s the twist I couldn’t shake off: if he believes criminals should be eliminated, doesn’t that make him a criminal for killing them? Does this mean Lee deserves the same fate?

For now, luck seems to be on Lee’s side, but how long can he run away from the consequences of his actions in this dangerous life he’s stumbled into? A Killer Paradox grips you unlike typical murder mysteries filled with gunshots, screams, and fights. As the plot grows, Lee discovers a surprising and unusual talent of his after unintentionally taking down a serial killer.

The crime thriller, based on a Naver Webtoon of the same name, is directed by Lee Chang-hee.
