Mythology met sci-fi in Nag Ashwin-Prabhas’ pan-Indian blockbuster, Kalki 2898 AD, which held the position of highest grosser of the year till it was displaced recently by Allu Arjun-Sukumar’s Pushpa 2. The film was celebrated for creating a world that was not just futuristic but properly grounded in our country’s celebrated epics. We had Prabhas playing Karna, and Amitabh Bachchan playing the generation-spanning Ashwathama. Interestingly, we see a silhouette of Lord Krishna, who appears in the film during the crucial post-climactic portions that reveals Prabhas as Karna in the battle of Kurukshetra. Right then, there were speculations about who would possibly play that role in the part 2 of the film. Although the role was played by actor Krishnakumar Balasubramanian, known for his role in Soorarai Pottru, the makers’ choice of keeping it as a silhouette, lead to names like Mahesh Babu and Nani as possible actors to play Krishna in the sequel.

In a recent press interaction, Nag Ashwin responded to these speculations, especially Mahesh Babu essaying the much-hyped role. “I did not want to show the face of Lord Krishna in the Kalki universe. But, if there is a full-length role, I think Mahesh Babu will be apt,” said Nag Ashwin, adding that the adulation of the Superstar’s fans would ensure Kalki 2 becomes an all-time blockbuster. “I believe the film would collect huge numbers.”

Although Mahesh Babu hasn’t yet starred in a mythological film, he previously essayed a form of divinity in Khaleja. Talking about that role, Nag Ashwin said, “I really love Mahesh Babu garu in the film Khaleja. The situation is so beautiful. Even if we imagine him in the role of Krishna, I am sure he will pull it off.” While there are no signs of this collaboration happening, it might be the biggest casting coup of Indian cinema if it happens because the Kalki universe already features actors like Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone
