Sarabhai vs Sarabhai character Rosesh’s voice was ‘found’ in a bathroom; actor Rajesh Kumar gave eight hour-long audition
In a recent interview, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai fame Rajesh Kumar revealed how he found the iconic voice of his character, Rosesh, in a bathroom.

The television show Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, celebrated as a cult classic, churned out immortal characters that continue to hold relevance even today. Among them, the beloved and quirky Rosesh Sarabhai, portrayed by actor Rajesh Kumar, has left an indelible mark on the audiences’ hearts. In a recent interview, Rajesh unveiled the hard work that went into creating the iconic character, particularly the distinctive voice that became Rosesh’s trademark.
Recounting his journey to bag the role, Rajesh shared that his prior collaboration with director and producer Aatish Kapadia in the popular TV show Khichdi led to an audition opportunity for the role of Rosesh Sarabhai in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, which was also helmed by Aatish. However, Rajesh wasn’t sure if he would be able to justify Rosesh on the screen.
He told Rajshri Unplugged, “When Atish enacted the scene in front of me, everything just bounced over me. I asked him for 15 days to prepare for the role. For 15 days, I went out to find Rosesh. I didn’t understand what happened in those 15 days as I couldn’t find anyone. When I went for the audition, I started it at two in the afternoon and it went on till 10 at night. My audition went on for eight hours.”
It was during his journey to find Rosesh that Rajesh stumbled upon the character’s unique voice in the bathroom of his house. He recalled, “I found Rosesh’s voice in the bathroom of my home. It was a very small bathroom so the voice would echo in there. In the echo, I found the voice of Rosesh. Finally, I got that treble and I would talk to everybody in that voice because I didn’t want to lose it.”
Sarabhai vs Sarabhai premiered its first episode on November 8, 2004. Although the show was lauded as ahead of its time, it didn’t gain the desired traction during its TV run. However, the rise of social media acted as a catalyst, and clips from the show began circulating, propelling it to a cult classic status.
