Raghu Ram and his twin, Rajiv Lakshman, became popular among the youth of the country as the judges of Roadies. Their tough persona on the show got them the tag of ‘bullies’, and they faced the repercussions of their no-nonsense behaviour on the show as boys picked up unnecessary fights with them on the streets or in clubs or restaurants. But Raghu has a problem with people’s perception of them basis their personalities on a TV show.

“I have an issue with the fact that people call us bullies but what we were doing was standing up to bullies. That’s how I see it, that’s what my intention was. If I saw someone being sexist, racist or really being mean to a group of people, I would take them on. That was me standing up to a bully,” Raghu told Cyrus Boracha on his podcast Cyrus Says. He added that he got ‘branded’ as a bully probably because of the “power equation in that room”.

Because of what happened during the audition of Roadies or even during the show, Raghu had to keep security with him. “For 5-6 years, I had to have security because a group of boys would come and slap me. I have gotten into fights. I have things thrown at me. The girls I met had weird fetishes and fantasies. When they were talking to me, they were talking to the Roadies guy, and would ask me to beat them or shout at them.”

Rajiv recalled how once at his son’s school where he was on the judge’s panel of some event, the teachers asked him to abuse. “I used to go to my son’s school and teachers would be like, ‘Why don’t you abuse?’ Students will be like ‘sir, gaali dena’ I was like, ‘No, I won’t'” Rajiv shared.

However, their experience on the show improved their understanding of Indian males and females, Raghu shared. He even revealed that Nikhil Chinapa, who joined Roadies in the fourth season, initially came with the approach of being the guy with whom people could discuss their issues. But it took him less than a day of auditions to change his perspective.

“Nikhil came in season four, and he said, ‘Buddy, I can’t be mean, I don’t know what your things is, I am the select guy, I am approachable, people come and they have to talk about their issues.’ It took less than a day for him to…by the end, he was held back by security, frothing at the mouth, abusing in five different languages,” Raghu narrated.

Why did Raghu quit Roadies?

After six seasons of being a part of the most popular youth-based reality show, Raghu quit Roadies due to issues with MTV. The channel wanted him to work exclusively with them and didn’t allow him to take projects outside of MTV.
