Actress Dalljiet Kaur made headlines throughout 2024 after her second marriage to Kenya-based Nikhil Patel ended in just ten months. Before marrying Nikhil in 2023, Dalljiet was married to actor Shalin Bhanot, with whom she shares a son, Jaydon. However, her marriage to Shalin ended in 2015 after she accused him of domestic violence. Recently, on the latest episode of SCREEN’s Dear Me, Dalljiet opened up about the aftermath of her divorce from Shalin.
Talking about her and Shalin’s love story, Dalljiet said, “Shalin and I did Kul Vadhu, and then Nach Baliye. When we won Nach Baliye, it became very obvious that we were a couple. We were obviously in love, so it was understood that we would get married to each other. After Nach Baliye, we got married within a couple of months. I was working on two shows when I met Shalin, so we would barely meet for an hour for coffee or something. The so-called dating was not like getting to know each other, but more like spending time together. We didn’t get that luxury of getting to spend a lot of time with each other. I wish I would have gotten to know more about him, then these things wouldn’t have happened.”
Sharing how she coped with the end of her first marriage, Dalljiet said, “After the first marriage fell apart, I was scared to be in a relationship for 9 years, and I missed that happy family life for that long. I took my own sweet time. I was in denial for more than 2-3 years that my marriage broke. The divorce word would not go down well with me; I would just break down and keep crying. At that time, Jaydon was an infant; it was not easy at all. Back then, I would get so offended if anyone flirted with me because I was still married in my head. Then, I started looking out because I wanted Jaydon also to see a normal family. After this, I was on every dating website and kept looking.”
When asked if Shalin Bhanot was involved in Jaydon’s life during those nine years, Dalljiet Kaur said, “Shalin was around in those 9 years. It was not like he was taking care or making decisions, but he would meet once in a while. Jaydon grew up seeing him around, calling him dad. I thought it was healthy for him to at least keep meeting Jaydon. So anytime Shalin asked to meet him, I would allow it. But today, if you ask Shalin how old is Jaydon, he wouldn’t know.”
Dalljiet also revealed how her son’s longing for a father played a role in her decision to remarry. “Jaydon was craving for a dad. He would see his friends having their dads around when he went for stayovers or even on Father’s Day, so he wanted that. He was thrilled for the second marriage because he, of course, missed having a father around at all times. It was a nightmare seeing Jaydon go through what he did. I protected him for 9 years. I took a decision back then to protect him, and then this happened. It felt like I failed. Jaydon didn’t deserve all of this; no child on this earth does.”
While Dalljiet Kaur is now focusing on rebuilding her life, she is also supporting her son through this challenging period. Meanwhile, actor Shalin Bhanot is rumoured to be dating Bigg Boss 18 contestant Eisha Singh.
