Days after a 19-year-old woman was found murdered in Gurgaon, police arrested two men on Saturday, including the victim’s brother, for allegedly strangling her to stop her from marrying the man of her choice.

The deceased was a resident of UP’s Etah district. Her brother is aged 28 and his friend 30 years; the latter hails from Agra.

“The brother feared that his sister’s decision to marry against the family’s wishes would bring disgrace to them in society. He confided in his friend, and the two hatched a plan to eliminate her,” a police spokesperson said.

According to the police, the woman had left her village for Gurgaon on December 1.

“On December 9, her brother met her and tried to force her to return home, but she refused. On December 10, his friend lured her by promising to help arrange her wedding with her partner. However, he took her on his bike from Rampura Chowk to an abandoned brick-and-tin structure near Gwalior village on the Panchgaon-Pada Road,” the spokesperson added.

Police said he first allegedly sexually assaulted the victim before strangling her with a chunni (scarf). “He then called the victim’s brother to the spot and the two dumped her body in the derelict shack,” they added.

The body was discovered on December 13 after a passerby alerted police. The victim had clear strangulation marks on her neck and a word written on her right wrist.
