Sunday night is going to be special for Bigg Boss fans as Salman Khan will flag off its seventeenth season. The theme of Bigg Boss 17 is ‘Dil, Dimag aur Dum’ and contestants would be categorised in the following. 17 celebrities including Ankita Lokhande and husband Vicky Jain, Munawar Faruqui, Jigna Vora, Isha Malviya and former boyfriend Abhishek Kumar, and Mannara Chopra among others would get locked in the palatial house for 105 days.
While it’s still a long wait, one among them would go home with the champion’s title after 15 weeks. And as we guess who could that be, here’s turning the pages back on the show to know more about its past winners.
Bigg Boss winner Rahul Roy: Bigg Boss season 1 kickstarted in 2006 and became an instant success. Given it was a novel format, fans were in for a surprise to see their favourite celebrities being so candid on camera. They were even shocked to see them fight for food, and in one instance, over a coffee mug. While Rakhi Sawant and Kashmera Shah kept us all entertained throughout the season, it was the calm and composed Rahul Roy who took home the trophy.
Having gained popularity with Aashiqui, many would have expected Rahul Roy to become a star. However, most of his films either failed at the box office or never took off. His other notable work includes Junoon, Jaanam, Pehla Nasha and Naseeb. He made his small screen debut with Karisma Kapoor’s Karishma- The Miracles of Destiny. In 2020, the actor faced a major setback after he suffered a brain stroke while he was shooting in Kargil for a film. Roy was last seen in Agra, which was screened at Cannes earlier this year.
Bigg Boss 2 winner Ashutosh Kaushik: Roadies 5 winner Ashutosh Kaushik won Bigg Boss 2 with hardly any effort. With just a few ‘entertaining’ contestants in the season, the ‘village boy’ kept audiences impressed with his desiness. His equation and chemistry with Diana Haydon was also much enjoyed by fans.
Apart from a few guest appearances, Ashutosh Kaushik did not really make the most of his newfound fame. Instead, he moved to his hometown in Punjab to help his family run their dhaba. However, he recently started his YouTube channel and has been hosting chat shows on the same. Kaushik was also in the news when he tied the knot during the lockdown.
Bigg Boss 3 winner Vindu Dara Singh: Hosted by Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, this season of Bigg Boss has been the most forgettable. As per media reports, Big B had laid a stringent set of rules about how the show should be made making it quite a ‘boring affair’. Even though Kamal Rashid Khan, Raju Srivastava and Ismail Darbar were contestants, it could hardly make any noise. The show was won by Vindu Dara Singh, while Pravesh Rana was announced as the runner-up.
Post Bigg Boss, Vindu Dara Singh has been part of films like Garv, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, Partner, Kisse Pyaar Karoon, Kambakkht Ishq, Housefull among others. He also participated in Nach Baliye 9 along with wife Dina Umarova, and was also part of Bigg Boss 14 as a challenger.
Bigg Boss 4 winner Shweta Tiwari: Bigg Boss 4 started the trend of television bahus entering the Bigg Boss house to break out from their image. And given the fandom they had, they also got massive votes. Shweta Tiwari was the winner of the show. The season was quite popular and also marked the debut of Salman Khan as the Bigg Boss host. While WWE champ The Khali’s entry was the biggest attraction, it also had a live wedding on national television for the first time.
Shweta Tiwari is still remembered as Prerna from Kasautii Zindagii Kay. She went on to star in shows like Parvarrish, Begusarai and even participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. The actor also made her digital debut with Hum Tum Aur Them and did TV shows like Mere Dad Ki Dulhan and Main Hoon Aparajita. Shweta’s daughter Palak Tiwari recently made her debut with Salman Khan’s Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. The actor was also in news over her ugly separation with her second husband Abhinav Kohli.
Bigg Boss 5 winner Juhi Parmar: Following her footsteps, TV bahu Juhi Parmar aka Kumkum also went on to win Bigg Boss 5. The season is mostly remembered for Sunny Leone’s foray into the Indian film industry after a successful career in the American adult industry. This was also the first time that the show had two hosts – Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt.
Post winning Bigg Boss 5, Juhi Parmar went the family way and delivered a baby girl. After a long break, she made a comeback with Karmaphal Daata Shani and also did the supernatural drama Tantra. Now a single mother, Juhi has also ventured into vlogging and was last seen in web show Yeh Meri Family.
Bigg Boss 6 winner Urvashi Dholakia: Kasautii Zindagii Kay’s popular vamp Komolika, Urvashi Dholakia shocked everyone with her candid avatar in Bigg Boss 6. While the season is mostly remembered for Imam Siddiqui and his antics, Dholakia went on to win the show.
After winning Bigg Boss, Urvashi Dholakia was seen in Chandrakanta — Ek Mayavi Prem Gaatha. She also participated in Nach Baliye 9 with former boyfriend Anuj Sachdev and was seen in Naagin 6 recently. As per reports, Urvashi is one of the contestants in the upcoming Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.
Bigg Boss 7 winner Gauahar Khan: From the time she entered Bigg Boss 7, Gauahar Khan looked like a winner with her clear thoughts and mature personality. Her chemistry with co-contestant Kushal Tandon was also much loved. Gauahar had a very interesting journey, one of the best ones in the history of the show where she was at loggerheads with Tanisha Mukherjee, said to be the chosen one by the makers.
Immediately after her Bigg Boss win, Gauahar Khan participated in Khatron Ke Khiladi 5. She then hosted India’s Raw Star and also participated in I Can Do That. She was part of films like Fever, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, and Begum Jaan. Gauahar Khan also turned into a vlogger and entrepreneur and has even done web shows like The Office and Hero. She made a comeback to the show as a guest participant in Bigg Boss 14. Post which she got married to Zaid Darbar, and earlier this year, she delivered a baby boy.
Bigg Boss 8 winner Gautam Gulati: While Karishma Tanna came across as a strong contender in the season, Gautam Gulati snatched the trophy from her hand towards the last leg of the show. People fell in love with him, especially seeing his never-say-die attitude and the passion to entertain audiences even when pushed to a corner by other contestants. Gautam also made headlines for his whirlwind romance with fellow housemate Diandra Soares.
Post Bigg Boss, Gautam went on to host MTV Big F and also starred in movies like Azhar, Behan Hogi Teri, Virgin Bhanupriya, Operation Cobra and Salman Khan’s Radhe. He is currently seen as one of the gang leaders of MTV Roadies.
Bigg Boss 9 winner Prince Narula: The ‘king’ of reality shows, Prince Narula entered Bigg Boss 9 after winning Splitsvilla and Roadies. With a smart mind, straightforward nature, and a daredevil attitude when it comes to tasks, Prince Narula went on to win the show. He was also quite a loyal friend and supported his gang till the end. Prince also met the love of his life, and now wife, Yuvika Chaudhary on the show.
Prince Narula became a star after Bigg Boss 9 and went on to make his acting debut with Badho Bahu. He also returned to Roadies as a gang leader, and has starred in several music videos. Prince and Yuvika won Nach Baliye 9 and he was also seen in Lock Upp as a challenger. As of now, apart from being on Roadies, Prince is also pursuing his career as a singer
Bigg Boss 10 winner Manveer Gurjar: For the first time, Bigg Boss opened its door to commoners in the 10th season. While Manveer Gurjar initially seemed to be under the shadow of Manu Punjabi, towards the last leg of the game, he impressed all with his innocent yet strong personality.
While Manveer Gurjar went on to participate in Khatron Ke Khiladi post his big win, he could not utilise the fandom and fame. While it was said that he would soon start acting, there’s no news of the same.
Bigg Boss 11 winner Shilpa Shinde: Despite being a season with many popular faces, Shilpa Shinde broke all the records to win the show. Hina Khan and Vikas Gupta were her biggest challengers in the season.
The actor did not sign any big project after her win, which came as quite a disappointment for fans. She has been part of comedy shows like Dhan Dhana Dhan and Gangs of Filmistan, and was last seen in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Post her eviction, she had called out the makers and even judges for being biased.
Bigg Boss 12 winner Dipika Kakar: This season was probably one of the dullest ones in the history of Bigg Boss, and winner Dipika Kakar too had quite a boring journey. While the show had a mix of celebrities and commoners, nothing seemed to work. Even controversial figure Sreesanth could not create any sparks and was reduced to being Dipika’s ‘bhai’ in the game.
Dipika Kakar went on to do shows like Qayamat Ki Raat and Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum. During the pandemic, she started her YouTube channel where she gives a glimpse of her life with husband Shoaib Ibrahim. The couple recently welcomed their first child, a baby boy Ruhaan.
Bigg Boss 13 winner Sidharth Shukla: While ‘TV bahus’ have dominated the show, small screen star Sidharth Shukla broke the trend. The season was one of the most successful ones, thanks to Sidharth’s special bond with Shehnaaz Gill and his brother-turned-foe equation with Asim Riaz.
While careers fly after Bigg Boss, the lockdown was announced just a month after the finale, bringing to a halt many of his shows. He also appeared in Bigg Boss 14 as a ‘senior’ along with Gauahar Khan and Hina Khan and made his digital debut with Broken 3. He was at the top of his game, but unfortunately, life had a different plan. In September 2021, the actor died after suffering a massive heart attack.
Bigg Boss 14 winner Rubina Dilaik: Keeping to the trend, TV bahu Rubina Dilaik was announced as the winner of Bigg Boss 14. The actor had entered the show along with husband Abhinav Shukla, as they wanted to test their relationship. While the couple was often targetted by their co-inmates, they stood their ground and emerged stronger after the show.
After Bigg Boss 14, Rubina went back to her popular show Shakti: Astitiva Ke Ehsaas Ki. After which, she participated in reality shows Khatron Ke Khiladi 12 and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 10. She also hosted Entertainment Ki Raat Housefull and a travel show Wanderlust, which Abhinav also co-hosted. The couple is expecting their first child soon.
Bigg Boss 15 winner Tejasswi Praksash: This season was probably one of the most star-studded ones. From Shamita Shetty, Tejasswi Prakash, Raqesh Bapat to Karan Kundrra, everyone had a different favourite. At the end of the game, it was Tejasswi Prakash who managed to win the hearts and also the trophy. And not to forget, Karan Kundrra’s love on Bigg Boss 15.
Immediately after her win, Tejasswi was cast as the face of Naagin 5. The actor has been busy for almost two years with the supernatural show. She is also going strong with Karan and the two are expected to tie the knot soon.
Bigg Boss 16 winner MC Stan: Bigg Boss 16 had one of the most unexpected climaxes. While most fans fought over Shiv Thakare and Priyanka Chahar Choudhary being deserving winners, it was rapper MC Stan who took home the trophy. Many did question the makers about the choice but it was said that his fans voted in massive numbers for him.
MC Stan continues to keep his fans entertained with his music, and launched a number of music albums.
