(Credit: ANI)Over a month after the chilling Karur stampede incident where 41 people were crushed to death at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally, party chief and actor ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay finally broke his silence and addressed the matter on Wednesday. On the occasion, Vijay said that Chief Minister MK Stalin and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), alleging that they “peddled lies” as part of a political game sans any humanity.
Speaking during TVK’s general council meeting on Wednesday, Vijay also claimed that he maintained silence during that time as he was in mourning. “I was in indescribable pain and distress all these days because of losing members of our family. In such a situation, it is our duty to stand by the feelings of our own people,” he said.
Tearing into his political adversaries, Vijay alleged, “During the time of silence and mourning, meaningless rumours and malicious political narratives were spread and forced upon us. All of this will be destroyed with the support of law and truth.”
Criticising CM Stalin for allegedly making false claims while requesting others not to politicise the tragedy, the actor-turned-politician said, as reported by The News Minute, “People will know how Stalin is trying to propagate lies. We faced difficulties in getting venue permissions in every district. Even when we asked for spacious places, we were given narrow ones where people had to stand in congestion.”

“I will repeat what I said in my last public meeting. When nature and God are with us, when our own people stand with us, who can stop us? All these struggles are just temporary; let us shatter them. Our journey will not be stopped. Let’s be confident, and good things are bound to happen,” Hindustan Times quoted him as saying.

On Monday, October 27, Vijay had met the families of the Karur stampede victims in Mahabalipuram near Chennai. Thirty-seven of the 41 families were brought to a seaside resort near his home on Chennai’s East Coast Road by private buses from Karur, located over 400 km away. Vijay apparently met each family individually at an auditorium in the resort.
