2024 was a rather mixed bag for Tamil cinema, and it is expected that Viduthalai 2, the much-awaited sequel to National Award-winning filmmaker Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai, will help the industry end the year with a bag. The film, which stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role, also marked comedian Soori’s transformation into a lead hero. Viduthalai 2, which starts off from where the first part ended, is expected to delve deeper into the backstory of Perumaal Vaathiyaar, played by Sethupathi, and bring to close the intertwining stories of the rebel and the police officer Kumaresan, played by Soori.
The trailer of the sequel was launched in an event in Chennai where the songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja were also released. In the trailer, we see what made labourer Perumal into Perumal Vaathiyaar. We are told how oppression has many faces, and the consequences of the same isn’t something everyone can fathom. There are shots of gratuitous violence being meted out against the oppressed not just by the oppressors in society, but also institutionalized violence through the police and other such forces.

The trailer also introduces Manju Warrier, who plays an activist and Perumal’s love interest. The caste angle of these leads comes into play through the peripheral characters introduced in the trailer. Just like the first film, Vetrimaaran promises not to mince any opinions, and present to us a gripping, gory, and heart-wrenching and inspiring tale of a bunch of people fighting for their rights against the entire might of the system.

Apart from Vijay Sethupathi and Soori who reprise their roles from the original, the sequel also brings back Gautham Vasudev Menon, Rajiv Menon, and Chethan. Viduthalai 2 will also have Manju Warrier playing a pivotal role.
Post the success of Viduthalai, Soori has become a bonafide hero with films like Garudan and Kottukkaali establishing his credentials as a leading star. Meanwhile, post Viduthalai 2, Vetrimaaran is expected to resume work on Vaadivaasal, his much-awaited collaboration with Suriya.
