Actor Suhasini Maniratnam, wife of Tamil ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam recently opened up about how she once refused to do a scene because she was feeling extremely uncomfortable on set. She recalled that the scene required her to sit on the hero’s lap and lick the same ice cream that he was eating.

Talking to ABP at Southern Rising Summit, Suhasini opened up about her experience and recalled, “I was asked to sit on a hero’s lap, I refused. I said, ‘It is in a park, in India, in 1981, no woman sits on a man’s lap in a park, so I won’t sit there’. There was a shot where he was licking an ice cream and he was feeding me, I said no, I’m not having the same ice cream, change the scene, get me another ice cream, and my dance director was surprised (as) you are not supposed to refuse so I said, of course, I can refuse an ice cream… I said I wouldn’t touch it.”

She shared that before putting her foot down she always found someone on the set who would support her because it is difficult to be alone in such battles. “I’ll always find somebody who’ll be on my side because you can’t win these battles alone,” she said.

Suhasini then shared that her colleague, Shobhana too had a similar experience. Shobhana, a National Award-winning actress who predominantly featured in Malayalam films, was asked why she was behaving like Suhasini when she refused to do a scene. “I still remember Shobhana, when she went to do a scene and the director asked her, ‘Who do you think you are, are you Suhasini?’ so she asked me ‘What is so special about you? Why do directors ask me if I was Suhasini?’ So, I said. ‘Yes! There should be more Suhasinis and more Shobhanas so people get used to people refusing.”

Suhasini shared that she once refused to get out of the car after she heard the lyrics of the song she was meant to shoot. She shared that refusing anything to anyone on a movie set was unheard of in those days.
