SS Rajamouli was called ‘good for nothing’, but his life-changing comment came from his ‘bhabhi’
Director SS Rajamouli, in an old video, opened up about his family's struggle, and what made him change his life around.

It would be hard to believe that someone called SS Rajamouli, the Telugu director who put Tollywood on the global map, ‘good-for-nothing’. It was none other than the director’s aunt, who criticized the director for not helping their struggling family. In a throwback video, which has gone viral on Reddit, Rajamouli opened up about how his family initially struggled, failing to make ends meet. However, he was adding to the burden without having a proper job. However, one day a comment from his ‘bhabhi’, who is a mother figure to the director, changed the life of Rajamouli.
In the video, Rajamouli said, “We started off as a very rich family. My father owned 360 acres of land in a place in Karnataka. By the time, I was 10 or 11 years old, everything was sold out. They lost everything. We went to Chennai. We were 13 members, and we were living in a bedroom apartment. Every day we used to worry about how to pay the rent. My elder brother was the sole breadwinner for the whole family. And that was the time, he got married. We call our bhabhi ‘Amma’, we never called her bhabhi.”
He added, “By the time I was 22, I was doing nothing. For five years, my father had been asking me to do something. I used to be slippery like an eel. One of my aunts was scolding me, saying, ‘Rajamouli is good for nothing.’ My bhabhi told me, ‘I don’t want my son to be called by bad names by anyone.’ That’s the only thing she told me, and I suddenly started taking my life seriously and started working seriously.”

SS Rajamouli worked as an assistant to many directors in Chennai and Andhra Pradesh. He also assisted his father, Vijayendra Prasad, before becoming a director with the film Student No: 1, which had Jr NTR in the lead role. He again teamed up with Jr NTR in Simhadri. He became popular with Prabhas’ Chatrapathi. However, Magadheera, starring Ram Charan, made him a notable figure. Later, Eega became a blockbuster hit, paving the way for Baahubali, and the rest is history.
