Sivakarthikeyan on handling success and failure: ‘I accept responsibility, but I have all the rights to…’
In a recent interview, Sivakarthikeyan opened up about how he handles success and failures, and why he believes the buck of responsibility starts and stops with him.

In many ways, Sivakarthikeyan is seen as a role model for many acting aspirants who believe there is a space for outsiders in cinema. His rise from a comedy show contestant to a TV host to a hero’s sidekick to a hero, and now a bonafide superstar is a journey that many would appreciate, and many more would love to emulate. But what really stands him apart is his clarity on the kind of films he wants to do, and the measured moves he takes to achieve the vision in his head. Understanding the various stakeholders of cinema has been one of his strengths that has endeared him to not just the masses but many cinema insiders too. Probably why, when Prince, his 2023 film with director Anudeep, didn’t perform as expected in Tamil Nadu, he paid money to distributors who incurred losses.
“I have to take responsibility for my failures. It is important to understand what went wrong,” said Sivakarthikeyan, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Calling success as a combined effort but a failure as a lone burden to bear, Sivakarthikeyan said, “I haven’t done remakes in my career. So, I personally listen to every script before doing the film. We believe it would do well, but sometimes, it doesn’t. So, I am responsible for those choices.” Drilling home the point that it is important for an actor to understand the results of their films, Sivakarthikeyan also added that it doesn’t mean he wants to be comfortable with the results. “If that’s the case, I’d opt for remakes, right? They are films that worked somewhere else, and it becomes an exercise in replicating success. But I prefer learning the process of saying yes to a script, understanding what works or didn’t, and then seeing how it pans out.”
Even in the case of Prince, which was director Anudeep’s followup to his super successful debut, Jathi Rathnalu, Sivakarthikeyan asserted that the film’s biggest problem was the hero. “Prince was not Anudeep’s mistake. It would have done really well with another hero. In fact, it did really well in Telugu too. Of course, there are some flaws in the script, but the decision and responsibility is completely mine. That is why I gave an amount to the producer to pay back the distributors. Some might say it isn’t the right working practice, but I feel responsible,” said Sivakarthikeyan.
However, this magnanimity doesn’t come at the cost of not enjoying the success of his planning and hard work. “While I do understand that success is a collective effort, I don’t stop myself from enjoying my success. I accept responsibility for my failures, right? So, I have all the rights to enjoy success,” said the Doctor actor, who pointed out how many on social media have no qualms hating on him for the failures, but refrain from crediting him for his film’s success. ‘I am not okay with it,” said Sivakarthikeyan, pointing out this to be one of the reasons for him staying away from social media. “It was affecting me. It gives the illusion that everyone is against you. I just switched it off, did my work, and I’m seeing the result. Also, information reaches us even if we are not on social media, so why should I use it more often?”
On the work front, Sivakarthikeyan, who had the biggest success of his career in Rajkumar Periasamy’s Amaran, has AR Murugadoss’ next, and Sudha Kongara’s upcoming biggie, which also features Jayam Ravi and Atharva in important roles.
