Selvaraghavan hints at the story of 7/G Rainbow Colony sequel: ‘What if Kadhir from the first film is still thinking…’
Selvaraghavan spoke about cracking the screenplay for the upcoming 7G Rainbow Colony sequel, the unavailability of Karthi and Dhanush for the next three years, and much more.
Selvaraghavan talks about the new direction he is exploring with the 7/G Rainbow Colony sequel, casting other actors in Ayirathil Oruvan and Pudhupettai sequels and much more.Selvaraghavan has carved a new path for himself as an actor, impressing audiences with his portrayals of antagonists in recent Tamil films. After his chilling performance as a cold-blooded financier in Shane Nigam’s sports drama Balti, he is now set to play a brooding serial killer in Vishnu Vishal’s upcoming crime thriller Aaryan. Recently, Selvaraghavan sat down with Baradwaj Rangan to discuss Aaryan, the sequels of his directorals currently in the works, and why he initially considered 7G Rainbow Colony a closed chapter.
When asked about the fanfare surrounding the possible sequels of his films, Selvaraghavan said, “You feel happy hearing that. But there is the thing, I can’t suddenly decide to make a sequel to my films. I can’t make that call alone. I should wait for a lot of people to come together to make that happen.”
Addressing the sequel rumours surrounding his acclaimed mythological epic Aayirathil Oruvan and the gangster drama Pudhupettai, Selvaraghavan was asked about a hypothetical scenario in which the original leads, Karthi and Dhanush, were unavailable to reprise their roles. The filmmaker responded: “I can think of those films with other people in the lead. The two stars you spoke about are not available for 3 years as of now. So I can do that. There are other characters and storylines we can follow. Whether I did it consciously or not, both these movies did not end from the hero’s perspective, so we can make the sequels with anyone. But the script has to satisfy me. I have completed 50% of the script for Pudhupettai.”
The director also spoke candidly about his initial hesitation to make a sequel to his cult classic teenage romance 7G Rainbow Colony, explaining that he had always considered the story complete by the end of the first film. “When my original producer, Rathnam sir, asked me about the possibility of doing a sequel to 7G Rainbow Colony, it made me think a lot at first. I thought that the story had ended with the first film, no? How do I come up with a second part to that story? I really liked that challenge. So I told him, ‘Sure, we can do it.’ The character of Kadhir from the movie is still alive after the death of Anitha. I thought, what if Kadhir from the first film is still thinking about that girl only and living in love? It’s not possible in real life. But that’s what we are trying to say with the sequel.”
Selvaraghavan also provided an update on the status of his upcoming directorial ventures: “60% shoot of my 7/G Rainbow Colony sequel and my other directorial, Mental Manadhil, starring G V Prakash Kumar, has been completed.”
