Mysskin apologises after his profanity-laden speech draws criticism: ‘I consider all of you as gods, and I am sorry…’
Notable personalities like lyricist Thamarai, actor-filmmaker Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, producer S Thanu, and actor Arul Doss expressed their displeasure over director Mysskin's speech at the press meet of Bottle Radha.

For quite a few years now, press meets of films are used as an excuse to create one controversy or another, which in turn, boosts the visibility of the said film. In fact, this has been going on for long enough to make this into a running gag. However, with all gags, this too, time and again, flies too close to the sun, resulting in an intense crash and burn. The most recent case involved director Mysskin, who delivered a profanity-laden speech at the press meet of Bottle Radha. He also made light of serious issues like alcoholism.
Following his speech, where he also spoke about how Ilaiyaraaja’s music was an intoxicant, albeit his choice of words didn’t go down well with many, there were voices that criticised Mysskin for his speech. Notable personalities like lyricist Thamarai, actor-filmmaker Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, producer S Thanu, and actor Arul Doss expressed their displeasure over his words. Responding to their criticisms, Mysskin used another press meet to clarify his stance, and unequivocally apologise for his words.
In the press meet of director Varsha Bharath’s Bad Girl, the joint collaboration between Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap, Mysskin attempted to atone for his words at the previous event. He said, “I understand that apologies are in order for a few, but it is okay to apologise to them because they are all my friends. Let me take a little time, Vetri, because I should use this pedestal to speak from my heart.”
Interestingly, even as he rendered his apologies to his critics, it wasn’t without the usual Mysskin touch of sardonic wit. While he thanked Thamarai for pointing out the demerits of his previous speech, he also clarified that he didn’t let success get to his head, as she had pointed out. “I have been struggling for so many years in this industry. I can guarantee you that success isn’t in my head,” said the filmmaker, who also expressed his apologies to other critics of his words. “Also, for the person who said he will throw a slipper at me. My size is 8, and kindly throw two.”
He went on to clarify that those words were spoken in jest, and even the audience of the event, which included directors Pa Ranjith, Vetrimaaran, and Ameer among others, understood the intent with which it was spoken. However, he accepted that he might have gone a bit too far with his choice of words, but reiterated that it wasn’t meant to ruffle any feathers, and it was misconstrued to be something else. “I am someone who respects cinema. My films are all about love, and imparting the right social messages. I consider all of you as gods, and I apologise to all of you,” said Mysskin.

Despite his unconditional apology, actor-filmmaker Vishal, in a press meet late on Sunday, opined that it has become a repetitive trend of sorts for Mysskin to say unsavoury things on the stage, and apologise for the same on a different stage.
Nevertheless, here’s hoping it puts an end to the spotlight being on the speeches made during the press meets for films, instead of training it all on the film itself.
