Army personnel held for ‘raping woman inside train’ in Jharkhand

The accused has been identified as Ajit Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who is currently posted with the 42 Medium Regiment of the Indian Army in Patiala, Punjab.

A senior railway official said the incident fell under the jurisdiction of GRP Ranchi, as its jurisdiction extends from Ranchi to Muri. “The complaint was lodged in Ranchi because any incident taking place between Ranchi and Muri is handled by GRP Ranchi,” the official said.

Clarifying the location of the incident, the official said it did not take place on a passenger platform. “The incident occurred on line number three, where the train was at the stationed. It was not a passenger train but an Army special train,” the official said.

The official also said the survivor was not a minor.

Based on the survivor’s statement, a case was registered at GRP Ranchi and an investigation was initiated. The survivor underwent a medical examination and her statement is being recorded as per legal procedure, police said.

The accused was produced before a local court on December 19 and was remanded to judicial custody. Police said the identity of the survivor is being kept confidential and the law and order situation remains normal.
