Khatija Rahman on father AR Rahman’s response after listening to her first song: ‘He advised me to find my own sound’

Khatija Rahman addressed a question on likely comparisons with dad AR Rahman, saying she wants to start slow and proves herself and only then should he talk about her.

Khatija Rahman is the latest to join the illustrious list of composers from the home of Oscar winner AR Rahman. She follows the footsteps of her grandfather RK Sekhar, her father AR Rahman, aunts AR Raihana and Ishrath, cousins GV Prakash Kumar and AH Kaashif, and brother AR Ameen. Khatija will be making her debut with maverick filmmaker Halitha Shameem’s Minmini.

Meeting the press ahead of the audio launch of her first film, Khatija said, “I sent appa (AR Rahman) the first song (Iruperum) and after hearing it, he said it was refreshing and calming. He advised me to find my own sound, and assured that he would always be there for me.”

When asked about his absence at her first stage as a music composer, a confident Khatija said, “It is better I start slow, prove myself, and then he talks about me. Otherwise, I know what will happen on social media. I have no interest in feeding the trolls. I can’t escape criticism or comparisons, but I would like to be my own person first.”

Divulging the impact trolling had on her, Khatija shared, “I had self doubts when I read the comments about my launch as a composer. In fact, I was dealing with imposter syndrome, and I understood that my work has to do the talking. I have not taken this opportunity for granted, and I’ve worked really hard for this. I hope people give constructive feedback about Minmini, instead of choosing to bash me on social media.”

Shedding light on her working style with Halitha, Khatija shared that they explored world music together, and her director’s honesty moulded her too. “She was clear in what she wanted. In fact, whenever she approved my tunes immediately, I used to be a bit apprehensive. In fact, I constantly asked her why she chose me for the project. But she was nothing but a pillar of support.”

Minmini, which is slated for an August 9 release, stars Esther Anil, Pravin Kishore, and Gaurav Kaalai. Shot and co-produced by Manoj Paramahamsa, Minmini is also backed by R Murali Krishnan, and filmed across locations like Chennai, Ooty, and Ladakh.
