Kamal Haasan praises PS Vinothraj’s Kottukkaali: ‘A beautiful rationalist story told in a wonderful cinematic language’ 

Kamal Haasan attended a special screening of Kottukkaali, headlined by Soori and Anna Ben, and the legendary actor-filmmaker was effusive with his praise for the film.

With just a day left for the release of PS Vinothraj’s Kottukkaali, the film received its biggest promotional boost. Kamal Haasan attended a special screening of the film, headlined by Soori and Anna Ben, and the legendary actor-filmmaker was effusive with his praise for Kottukkaali. 

Kamal penned a comprehensive three-page letter talking about the various nuances in the film, the themes it explored, the performances of all the cast members, the brave choices of Vinothraj, and Sivakarthikeyan’s decision to back the film.

The letter also explored the importance of audiences understanding and appreciating such films to elevate Tamil cinema to the next level. He emphasised on the runtime of the film, which is just a shade over 100 minutes, and the absence of a background musical score, and felt Kottukkaali has moved on from the era of the song-and-dance in Tamil cinema. Kamal also discussed in detail about the way Vinothraj draws parallels between his central characters and a bunch of animals, and elements of nature.

Thanking Kamal Haasan for taking out time to appreciate his production venture, Sivakarthikyean wrote, “A moment to cherish for our team Kottukkaali. Appreciation from the pioneer of Indian cinema, our Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan Sir. This letter is a treasure. Thank you so much Sir (sic).”

Interestingly, Kamal Haasan is backing Sivakarthikeyan’s next film, Amaran, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. The film, which is based on the life of late Captain Mukund Varadarajan, is set to hit the screens on October 31 for the festive season of Diwali. Meanwhile, Kamal Haasan, who is currently working in Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, will next star in National award-winning stunt choreographer duo Anbariv’s directorial debut.
