Vijay-starrer The Greatest of All Time, aka GOAT, was released in theatres on Thursday, and as expected, has become the biggest Tamil opener of the year. The film’s makers announced that Vijay’s penultimate film before he joins politics earned Rs 126.3 crore worldwide gross on day 1.

As per industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 43 crore nett (early estimates) in India. GOAT was released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, and saw impressive occupancy in theatres in Chennai. GOAT has surpassed Indian 2’s opening day numbers, which stood at Rs 25.6 crore, but has not managed to overtake the opening day numbers of Vijay’s last film, Leo. One of the biggest hits of 2023, Leo made Rs 63 crore nett on its opening day.

In Bengaluru, where it had 1140 shows, the occupancy was recorded at 60 percent. It was previously being said that the film might earn over Rs 100 crore worldwide on its opening day, but the global numbers of the film are yet to come in. Just a day before the release, the film got a clearance in Tamil Nadu for 9 am shows, so it could have five shows throughout the day, with the last show ending at around 2 am. But, the makers got the permission for the special show for just one day and the same privileges will not be extended to them for the upcoming weekend.

GOAT is said to be Vijay’s penultimate film as the star has previously hinted that he will move to politics after finishing his next film, Thalapathy 69, which is being made by director H Vinoth. It is yet to be seen if the excitement for Vijay’s second last film will actually translate into box office numbers. Vijay had two releases in 2023 – Leo and Varisu. While Leo was one of the biggest grossers of the year, Varisu did not have the same luck. The film clashed against Ajith’s Thunivu and made Rs 26.5 crore on opening day.

It is expected that GOAT’s collections will increase over the weekend but so far, it doesn’t look like it will be able to overtake Leo. Directed by Venkat Prabhu, GOAT also stars Prashanth, Sneha, Mohan, Prabhu Deva.
