Priya Bhavanishankar has a unique luck in films that clash at the box-office with big-ticket films featuring the biggest superstars. Her debut, Meyaadhaa Maan, released alongside Vijay’s Mersal, and managed to make a considerable impact at the box-office, and become one of the sleeper hits of the year. Now, she is headlining debutant filmmaker KG Balasubramani’s Black, which also stars Jiiva, and is expected to hit theatres alongside TJ Gnanavel-Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan. While the makers haven’t made an official announcement about the release date, they shared the trailer of Black, which has been received warmly by netizens.

In the trailer, we see a simple and seemingly happy couple, played by Jiiva and Priya Bhavanishankar, decide to stay in their new villa in a largely empty township. Now, we are shown the effects of Murphy’s Law when it comes to such films that dabble with horror and home invasion. There are flickering lights, sudden increase in radio frequency that hurts ears, more flickering lights, sudden plunge into darkness, some more flickering lights, shrieking voices, violent exchanges, broken shards of glass, hallucination, a guardian angel statue looming over the township, police intervention, missing partners, marital discord, and of course… you know… more flickering lights.

Here’s the trailer:

Black is set to join an interesting list of films that primarily revolves around a single day narrative. The list has names like Kaithi, 96, and even the recent film, Meiyazhagan. Concentrating on a singular night’s events would allow the makers to keep the writing taut, and yet provide the space to go all in.

Backed by Potential Studios, who have made a name for themselves by bankrolling such intriguing and experimental projects, Black also stars Yog Japee and Swayamsiddha. With music by Sam CS, and cinematography by Gokul Benoy, the film is expected to hit screens this October.
