Amaran director made ‘drained’ Sivakarthikeyan listen to entire script, didn’t tell him Kamal Haasan was producing

Amaran director Rajkumar Periasamy opened up about his experiences working with major stars such as Sivakarthikeyan, Vijay, and Sai Pallavi.

Amaran Movie ReviewAmaran stars Sai Pallavi and Sivakarthikeyan.

Director Rajkumar Periasamy, who most recently worked with actor Sivakarthikeyan on the film Amaran, opened up about his pitching process. He said that while some actors enjoy long narrations, others are happy to listen only to a brief summary. In a roundtable interview moderated by Galatta Plus, the filmmaker spoke about the different processes of actors such as Sivakarthikeyan, Vijay, and Sai Pallavi.

He said, “There are actors who read scripts, and there are people who give only five minutes. But I always insist on narrating the full story. Narrating just four highlight scenes is like showing a trailer. I would want all the stakeholders, the actors, actresses, even supporting actors, they should know… I will insist on narrating fully, otherwise I don’t have the mood to even go out and pitch my script.”

Recalling his interaction with Sivakarthikeyan for Amaran, Rajkumar Periasamy said that he knew that the deal was done after he finished narrating the first half, but he insisted that the actor continue listening. “At the end of the first half, when I said, ‘Intermission,’ he was already in. But I said, ‘No, you still listen to the second half.’ Even before the meeting, I had told him, ‘It’s a biopic about a martyr, and you will die in the end.’ He was shooting for a song, and the narration took place at 9 pm, when he was drained. But I insisted he listen to the entire script. I didn’t even tell him who the producer of the film is. Only later I told him Kamal Haasan is producing.”

Shedding further light on his experiences with ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay and Sai Pallavi, the filmmaker continued, “There are some actors who insist on knowing the full script. I worked with Vijay sir on the film Thuppakki (as an assistant), and he would insist, ‘I will go on set only if I know the full script. Whether it’s good or bad doesn’t matter, but I need to know the entire screenplay before I walk onto a set.’ This was some years ago, I don’t know what he’s like now. Sai Pallavi always prefers to read. In our case, she read it, and then we had a narration.”

Rajkumar worked with Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi on Amaran, which emerged as a significant hit at the box office. Previously, he directed the film Rangoon, starring Gautham Karthik.
