Director Raj Purohit, whose Jigariyaa has two newcomers in the lead, on how to extract the best out of raw talent

He worked with four newcomers when he made Sixteen and again director Raj Purohit has cast newbies Harshvardhan Deo and Cherry Mardia in his romantic flick Jigariyaa. The director who says he has a knack of getting the best out of newbies when shooting, states that half the job is done when the actors look like the characters they are to play. “Cherry looks like a Mathura girl of the 80s, the era in which the film is set, and Harshvardhan, a lot like his character Shamu. Physical appearance is very important while casting,” says Purohit adding that, during the shooting, it’s best left to the actors how they conceive their characters rather than telling them what to do, which he feels can look forced on screen.
“Provoking them or at times shouting at them also gets the best out of them. An emotional scene required Cherry to talk to her friend on the phone. I yelled at her as she was not getting the shots right in the first two takes and the next shot was perfect,” recalls Purohit.
Jigariyaa releases on October 10.
