Dimple Kapadia revels in quirky roles like that of Rosie Eucharistica in Finding Fanny; the ample back and big stomach notwithstanding

Dimple Kapadia, Bollywood’s eternal enchantress ever since she blazed her way into India’s collective memory as Bobby, much to the delight of her legion of fans is back in Finding Fanny, a film by acclaimed director Homi Adajania. Although she has been jesting about the fact that unlike her debut film Bobby which made her an overnight sensation—a sex symbol if you will—her role in Finding Fanny is anything but that!
Adajania, she says in mock anger has transformed her from the sexy Bobby in a swimsuit into a Bobda with a big bum and stomach!
Well jokes apart, Kapadia a veteran of offbeat films (Rudaali, Lekin among others) way before they became popular with the glamorous brigade, is thrilled to be a part of Adajania’s film—third in a row—where she gets to play Rosie Eucharistica, a lonely woman who lives with her daughter-in-law Angie (Deepika Padukone) a widow. The entire film, about the journey of five Goans in search of a postman’s lost love Stefanie, she says, is special, as “Homi does all the preparation; there is so much detailing and fleshed out characters, that I just have to execute it.”
She is happy that times are a changing wherein actors especially women actors, get to play a range of nuanced and interesting roles. “Cinema now is different with a variety of scripts coming in. The roles being written are all lovely and all the new actresses are doing a wonderful job. Deepika has done a very good job in the film. She is a very bright actress looking to push the envelope. It’s a pleasure to watch her.”
Of her contemporaries who have made the transition to new age films, she lauds Sridevi, Madhuri and Juhi who according to Kapadia have made a special place for themselves.
Shooting for Finding Fanny, she says was delightful, what with talented veterans like Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur on board, coupled with newbie Arjun Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and of course the film’s maverick director with whom she enjoys a great rapport. Rosie Eucharistica, described by Adajania as, “this woman with a big bum and big stomach who is a busybody, a martyr hiding a dark secret. She is bitter but has a soft side too.” She admits that it was an interesting role to sink her teeth into.
Adajania on his part jests that he has a life-long contract with her for all his films including the next one that he’s planning. “She bullies me and has threatened me with dire consequences if there’s no role for her in any of my films!”
The interesting quality about Kapadia, he avers is her eagerness to do a good job.
“She’s a little nervous before a shot, and wants your approval. To retain that quality is almost childlike. The interesting part is that in front of a film camera, she’s got the guts to do anything, but ask her to promote the film and she will disappear. She’s an enigma.”
