Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya / A different take
As viewers, we watch the show from the eyes of the sutradhar, even we feel more involved with the show, making it highly relatable. The soft theme music of the film Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, in the background, is a nice touch.

Quoting Sufi poet Rumi, all we really want is love’s confusing joy. However, there are times when this very joy turns into grave sorrow, with bitter consequences. Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya focuses on that bitterness. It plays on how love, as an emotion is so strong, that it could make you do things, bordering on insanity. The love stories shown are not full of peppy romance, that will make your heart sing. Instead, the show has a very unique take on love. The first episode was hosted by Meiyang Chang, who will be joined by Surbhi Jyoti, for the subsequent ones.
To dwell on the story of the first episode, it is based in the city of Dehradun, where three people are trapped in a love triangle, which ends with a murder. The story is based on a real life incident. Sid, an army cadet, falls in love with Piyali, a local girl. The city becomes a haven of love for them. Beautiful cinematography and romantic Bollywood tracks like I love you from the film Bodyguard fill your heart with warmth at this point. However, Sid gets posted to a remote location for 18 months and Piyali finds herself lonely. Enter Gaurav, the opportunist. With the distance between Sid and Piyali growing, he takes perfect advantage and woos Piyali. When Sid returns and finds Piyali and Gaurav, sharing an intimate moment, he reacts dramatically. The episode ends with Sid killing Gaurav, confessing to the murder and spending his life in prison. Hence, Sid’s intense true love for Piyali, makes him, a disciplined cadet of the Indian army, commit an ugly crime.
The treatment that the emotion of love has been given is extremely different. There are some typical romantic moments, with balloons and hearts, however, the show doesn’t havefairy tale ending and the scenes of the sutradhar, Meiyang Chang, in this episode, is actually shot in a place that resembles, the foggy, beautiful parts of Dehradun. His physical presence, in the place where the story is actually taking place, makes him look highly involved in the entire show. Since as viewers, we watch the show from the eyes of the sutradhar, it feels more real. The soft theme music of the film Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, in the background, is a nice touch.
Verdict: A refreshing change from stereotypical romance.
