It is with fond memories that Amol Palekar remembers his friend Deven Varma, who passed away recently. He recalls a time when Varma-directed Bada Kabutar bombed at the box-office. Not knowing its fate, Palekar went to see the film a couple of days after its release and loved the “beautiful simple comedy which was on the lines of Basu Chatterjee and Hrishikesh Mukherjee kind of films.” He called up Varma to congratulate him and he laughed and asked Palekar, which show he had seen. When he was told the 3 o’ clock show, Varma respondes with, “Good you saw it earlier. After that the film was declared a flop,” and laughed heartily.
Palekar remembers his friend as someone who always sported a smiling countenance.
